Successful integration through the unifying power of sport? A critical analysis of sport clubs, initiatives, and government policies in Germany through the lenses of migrants and lawmakers.
Successful integration through the unifying power of sport? A critical analysis of sport clubs, initiatives, and government policies in Germany through the lenses of migrants and lawmakers.
The increasingly social importance of sports clubs and leisure activities in Germany and throughout Western Europe is well-documented (Petry & Schulze, 2011; Makarova & Herzog, 2014). Given this trend, both German lawmakers and private citizens have turned to sports as a way to welcome and integrate the steadily growing refugee and migrant population. For instance, the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) launched the initiative “Welcome to Sport” to counter rising xenophobia and anti-migrant resentments. Aim of this study is to explore the role and socio-cultural impacts of sports clubs on migrants. Three research questions guided this study: 1) How do current sport policies reflect the lived experience of migrants in Germany? 2) Can sport indeed contribute to sustainable integration of migrants in Germany and therefore serve as best practice for other similar diverse countries (e.g., the United States and Canada)? A document analysis will be conducted along with semi-structured interviews of German sport policy makers as well as refugees and migrants living in Germany longer than two years. Anticipated findings of this study will ultimately showcase the sports’ potential as a bridge builder between cultures and nations while indicating its understudied and undervalued potential as a change and transformative agent.
