Women’s Ice Hockey in China: Political Economy and Gender Equality
In recent years, women’s ice hockey has undergone tremendous growth worldwide. After winning the bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympics, ice hockey in China started to develop rapidly under the government’s support (Li & Nauright, 2018). Political economy in sports examines the extension of capitalism’s production-consumption relations to development, politics, and economics of sports (Schimmel, 2005). For Chinese women particularly, this growth in hockey has encountered challenges, including struggling with traditional Chinese gender norms, along with the process of sport reform. Liberal feminist theory suggests females should have the same opportunities as males, and it attempts to remove the causes that prevent women from acquiring equal terms with men (Hargreaves, 1990). This research focused on understanding how the growth of women’s ice hockey impacted gender equality under the current political and economic situation in China. Utilizing a qualitative case study (Yin, 2017), the authors collected data from female hockey players, coaches, and club administrators from China, as well as acquiring data from multiple resources. Preliminary findings indicate the growth of women’s ice hockey in China created career and sport participation opportunities for female athletes of winter sports and promoted social support and liberalization for female athletes.
