In an effort to broaden the impact of sport sociology scholarship, researchers are increasingly calling for greater engagement with public sociology of sport across the field (Cooky, 2017). In line with this call, I propose to share insights from my doctoral research involving an intersectoral collaboration with various community partners including a community sport facility and two local settlement services organizations. The aim of this collaboration involves introducing newcomers to Canada to iconic Canadian winter sports through introductory skating, skiing, and snowboarding lessons. This presentation will focus on my role as a collaborator sharing insights from the sociology of sport and wider sociology academic fields. Namely, I will discuss the possibilities and pitfalls of engaging sport managers with sociological concepts such as integration, inclusion, and socially-constructed norms and values in an effort to achieve collaboration goals. Insights from this presentation will illustrate both the complexity of this work and the potential for contributing to organizational and program change. In line with the conference theme, I will provide suggestions for how sport sociologists can work within intersectoral collaborations towards decolonizing the implementation of mainstream sport programs, in part, through involving the voices of newcomer participants directly throughout the program lifecycle.
